The Reserve Bank of India is now issuing new Rs 500 denomination banknotes in Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series with inset letter 'L, bearing the signature of Dr. Urjit R. Patel Governor, Reserve Bank of India, the year of printing '2016'.

Principal features
The size of new Rs 500 note is 66mm x 150mm and the colour of the Rs 500 note is stone grey and predominantly a new theme of the Indian heritage site with the Indian flag on the reverse.
The new Rs 500 launched are different from the earlier specified bank note (SBN) series in colour, size and theme. The location of security features and design elements are also different.
Denominational value in Devnagari
The new note has see through register in denominational numeral along with latent image with the denominational numeral.
The orientation and relative position of Mahatma Gandhi portrait changed.
Earlier, see through register was floral in design and the same has been changed.
Governer's signature and promise clause
The security thread color will change from green to blue when the angle is changed. Earlier, the security thread will have "Bharat, RBI" on the thread and color would change from green to blue when the angle is changed.
Guarantee clause which comes with Governer's signature and promise clause and RBI emblem is shifted towards right.
Portrait of electrotype watermark
Portrait of electrotype watermark is light water mark, when held against the light, hidden image and electrotype mark is seen.
In earlier note, when note was held against the light, hidden image of Mahatma Gandhi, the multidimensional lines, and Rs 500 with electrotype mark was seen.
Colour changing ink
There is a number panel with numerals growing from small to big on the top left side and bottom right side.
There is a denomination in numerals with Rupee symbol in colour changing ink which will turn from green to blue on the bottom right. A new Ashoka pillar emblem on the right side can be viewed.
In the earlier Rs 500 note, the color green of Rs 500 changed to blue when tilted to an angle.
For the visually impaired
The banknote also has features intaglio printing of Mahatma Gandhi portrait, Ashoka Pillar emblem, 5 bleed lines, circle with Rs 500 in the right, and the identification mark which help the visually impaired person to identify the denomination.
On reverse of the note
The reverse of the note has the year of printing of the note towards left side.
Swachh Bharat logo with the slogan has been added and the language panel is towards the center of the note.
Red Fort-an image of Indian heritage site with Indian flag, while the denominational numeral in Devnagri is on the right side.
