Ayushman Bharat, India's flagship healthcare scheme, has recently undergone a significant expansion to include all senior citizens above the age of 70, providing them with free health coverage of up to Rs. 5 lakh annually. This expansion aims to reach 6 crore senior citizens in India. Ensuring that the elderly, who often face rising medical costs, have access to affordable healthcare services without worrying about financial burdens.
The recent changes to the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) have removed income-based restrictions for senior citizens above the age of 70. This means that all elderly individuals within this age bracket, regardless of their income or socio-economic status, are eligible to benefit from the scheme. As of the latest update, about 6 crore senior citizens are set to benefit from this policy expansion.

Is Aadhaar Mandatory for Enrollment?
The Aadhaar card is the only document that is needed and is mandatory for the enrollment process under Ayushman Bharat. The government has made Aadhaar-based e-KYC (Know Your Customer) a major part of the application process to ensure simple and verified identification. Senior citizens must present their Aadhaar card during enrollment to receive their health insurance benefits.
Benefits of the Scheme and How to Apply
Ayushman Bharat is a significant effort that is enhancing healthcare coverage for India's senior citizens and ensuring they have access to high-quality care for free. Beneficiaries are eligible to start receiving treatment from the moment they complete their enrollment, and there is no waiting time for any diseases or treatments.
Senior citizens aged 70 and above are eligible for an additional Rs.5 lakh top-up bonus on top of their existing plan enrollment. To obtain this benefit, beneficiaries need to renew their Aadhaar eKYC to update their information. The Rs. 5 lakh supplementary coverage only applies to family members aged 70 and above. The policy will continue to provide coverage of Rs.5 lakh for all other members of the household.
The application process is quite simple, and senior citizens can apply for the scheme through the official Ayushman Bharat website at Common Service Centers (CSCs). These centers assist in the enrollment process, especially for senior citizens who may not be familiar with online platforms. The application can also be submitted through partner hospitals. After successful registration, beneficiaries will receive an Ayushman Vaya Vandana Card which allows them access to cashless medical treatment at any hospital associated with this scheme.
