Starting 15 December, it is mandatory to have FASTags on your vehicle to pay tolls at National Highways across India. Some toll booths have been charging twice the toll for not complying and entering lanes reserved for FASTag users.

What are FASTags?
FASTag is an initiative introduced by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) in association with National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) for making automated payment deductions at toll plazas using prepaid rechargeable tags that work on RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology.
How do FASTags work?
Normally affixed to the vehicle's windscreen, a FASTag enables payment of toll with just a momentary slowdown. When the vehicle reaches the toll plaza, a reader will detect the chip on the tag and deduct the toll amount from the bank account or prepaid wallet linked to the FASTag.
These tags can be linked to bank accounts, prepaid wallets or UPI accounts like that from BHIM, to recharge the balance held.
Note:
- You can only recharge your FASTag using BHIM UPI app but cannot buy one over the app.
- Using BHIM app allows the FASTag user to recharge from more than one bank account linked to the UPI-based app, reducing hassles other seen with only one bank account or prepaid wallet.
How to recharge a FASTag using BHIM app?
- Download BHIM UPI app over Google Play (for Android phone users) or the Apple Store (if you are an iPhone user).
- Create an account, link your bank account and passcode to activate the app.
- On the app's home screen, tap on "Send" option under "Transfer Money." Enter the UPI ID of your FASTag (which will be created at the time of purchase of a FASTag with a bank). Tap on "Send to Self."
- Enter the amount you wish to recharge your FASTag's prepaid wallet with. Tap on "Pay."
- Re-enter the passcode to confirm the transaction.
- You will receive a text message on your phone confirming the recharge to your FASTag account.
