Nowadays, the majority of us carry little cash or no cash and majorly rely on UPI payments for money transfers or payments. However, using the internet for transactions frequently puts us in uncomfortable situations as the network sometimes causes trouble, which stops the UPI process online. However, not many of us are aware that there is an offline procedure for starting UPI payments.
To process UPI services across Indian banks, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) launched the "*99# service." By dialing *99# from your registered mobile number, you can access banking services and make purchases using an on-screen interactive menu.

NPCI offers various services under *99# service include, Sending and Receiving interbank accounts to account money, balance enquiry, setting/changing UPI PIN besides a host of other services. Here is a step-by-step process to initiate UPI transactions using the '*99#' USSD code from your smartphone.
Here's how to set up *99# service and make offline UPI payments:
Step 01: Dial *99# from your registered mobile number on your smartphone or feature phone using the same.
Step 02: Choose your desired language.
Step 03: Now, enter your bank name. You will be shown a list of bank accounts linked to your number.
Step 04:Now, select the one you want to use by pressing the correct option.
Step 05: Now, enter the last 6 digits of your debit card and its expiry date.
Step 06: Once you've successfully set up *99#, you can make UPI payments without the internet connection.
Here's how to send money and make payment using *99# service:
Step 01: Dial *99# on your phone.
Step 02: Now, enter 1 to send money.
Step 03: After that, choose your desired option and enter the UPI ID/phone number/bank account number of the person you want to send money.
Step 04: Then, enter the amount and your UPI PIN.
Step 05: Once you've completed the process, your payment will be made.
Note - By the time of writing, the current upper limit on this service is Rs. 5,000 per transaction.
