Income Tax Return (ITR) filing season is a crucial time for taxpayers to fulfill their obligations and report their income to the tax authorities. In recent years, the government has emphasized the importance of linking Permanent Account Number (PAN) with Aadhaar, the unique identification number for Indian residents.
Your PAN will become inactive on July 1, 2023, if you didn't link it to your Aadhaar by June 30, 2023. You might not be able to file your income tax return (ITR) before July 31, 2023, which is one of the effects of PAN going out of operation.

This is due to the fact that the ITR deadline is approaching quickly and that, if the penalty is paid, a PAN that is currently inactive can only become active again after 30 days.
There is a chance that you will miss the deadline for filing your ITR if you decide to pay the penalty and wait for your PAN to become active once more. Individuals whose total annual income exceeds Rs 5 lakh must pay a penalty of Rs 5,000 for reporting their ITRs late.
You might therefore have to pay a late filing charge of Rs 5,000 and submit a late ITR if your PAN is currently inactive. There is now an extra price of Rs 1,000 for linking your PAN and Aadhaar, making the total expenditure of Rs 6,000.
The late filing fees for a belated ITR will be Rs 1,000 if your total income does not exceed Rs 5 lakh, making a total payment of Rs 2,000 (including the PAN-Aadhaar connection fee) necessary.
It is advised for taxpayers to file their income tax returns by July 31, 2023, and to link their Aadhaar and PAN as soon as possible. Belated returns may be filed until December 31, 2023 in the event that the deadline is missed. For certain transactions, issues could arise if you don't quote an operating PAN.
What if you paid a fine to link your PAN to your Aadhaar?
You might have already paid the fine for linking your PAN and Aadhaar on or before June 30, 2023. The income tax division provided clarification in this regard via Twitter.
As per the tweet, "In cases where fee payment & consent for linking have been received, but linking has not been done till 30.06.2023, such cases will be duly considered by the Department."
Therefore, you can easily link your PAN with Aadhaar and submit your ITR on time if you paid the Rs 1000 penalty on or before June 30, 2023. You can avoid having to pay a late filing charge by submitting your ITR on time.
