India has acknowledged the critical need to empower and uplift its girl children in a country that aspires to gender equality. In order to protect its daughters' futures, the government has launched a number of programmes in an effort to combat lopsided sex ratios and ingrained gender prejudices.
An in-depth examination of the top ten government programmes for girls that are influencing India's socioeconomic environment is provided below:
1. Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (BBBP) Scheme: Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BBBP aims to address gender-based discrimination and promote girl-child education. It provides financial assistance for district-level initiatives, focusing on preventing gender-based abortions, ensuring safety, challenging stereotypes, and supporting education.

2. CBSE Udaan Scheme: Targeting girls in 11th and 12th grades, Udaan offers free course material, virtual classes, peer education, and career guidance to increase enrolment in engineering and technical colleges. Eligibility criteria include securing 70% in class 10 with minimum scores in Science and Mathematics.
3. Balika Samriddhi Yojana: This scholarship scheme supports girls from economically weaker families, providing cash rewards at birth and annual scholarships until the age of 18. It aims to elevate their social status, delay marriage, and promote education.
4. Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana: A savings scheme facilitating parents to invest in their daughters' future, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana assists in funding higher education and marriage expenses. Accounts can be opened at post offices or approved banks for girls below 10 years.
5. Ladli Scheme and Kanya Kosh Scheme: Haryana's Ladli Scheme rewards parents of second girl children with financial incentives, promoting gender equality regardless of caste or creed. Kanya Kosh extends support to the first girl child, depositing funds for her future education and marriage.
6. National Scheme of Incentive for Girls of Secondary Education: Encouraging girls from deprived backgrounds to pursue secondary education, this scheme offers a fixed deposit of Rs. 3000 upon completing 10th grade. Eligible candidates must be unmarried, below 16 years, and enrolled in government-aided schools.
7. Ladli Laxmi Yojana of Madhya Pradesh: Aimed at improving health and education among girls, this scheme provides financial assistance through National Saving Certificates. Beneficiaries receive funds at different stages of education, with conditions to deter early marriages.
8. Karnataka Bhagyashree Scheme: Focusing on healthcare and education, Karnataka's Bhagyashree Scheme offers financial aid to girl children from low-income households. Eligible beneficiaries receive annual scholarships and medical coverage.
9. Mazi Kanya Bhagyashree Scheme from Maharashtra: Maharashtra's initiative supports girls from marginalized backgrounds with financial assistance for the first five years, followed by scholarships until class 12. Families with annual incomes up to 7.5 lakhs qualify for the scheme.
10. Chief Minister's Girl Child Protection Scheme of Tamil Nadu: Targeting gender inequality, Tamil Nadu's scheme provides financial security to girl children through fixed deposits. Annual incentives are offered for education, with the maturity amount given at age 18, contingent on passing the 10th-grade exam.
These government schemes exemplify India's commitment to nurturing and empowering its girl children. By addressing socio-economic barriers and promoting education, they pave the way for a more equitable and prosperous future for generations to come.
