In an effort to enhance solar power and sustainable progress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 14, 2024 declared inauguration of 'PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana'. The scheme seeks to light up one crore houses by offering up to 300 units of free electricity per month. PM Modi divulged that project would involve an investment of more than Rs 75,000 crore. The scheme will encourage people to install solar panels on their rooftops.
Earlier, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the scheme during her Interim Budget 2024-25.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also shared the scheme on X saying, "In order to further sustainable development and people's wellbeing, we are launching the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. This project, with an investment of over Rs 75,000 crore, aims to light up 1 crore households by providing up to 300 units of free electricity every month."
PM Modi emphasised that under the scheme, substantive subsidies will be offered to the beneficiaries of the scheme and that they will be transferred directly to their bank accounts.
"From substantive subsidies, which will be given directly to people's bank accounts, to heavily concessional bank loans, the Central Government will ensure that there is no cost burden on the people," added PM Modi.
