Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana is a flagship scheme launched for the supply of cooking fuel such as LPG to rural and deprived households, and replace traditional cooking fuels such as firewood, coal, cow-dung cakes etc. Ujjwala Yojana scheme is not just affordable for low-rural region citizens but it is also a method to protect citizens from traditional cooking fuels that have detrimental impacts on the health of rural women as well as on the environment.
Initially, the scheme was launched in May 2016 in Ballina. However, with the success of the Ujjwala scheme, the government revamped the scheme and launched Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana 2.0 which has an additional allocation of 1.6 Crore LPG Connections under the PMUY scheme with special facility to migrant households. The target number of connections under Ujjwala 2.0 was achieved during Dec'22, thus taking overall connections under the scheme to 9.6 Crore.
