Anyone can now open a free savings account at the post office. With a minimum deposit balance of Rs 500, one can open a post office savings account both online and offline. A post office savings account will currently provide you with an interest rate of 4%. The interest you receive is tax-free up to a limit of Rs. 10,000 per year. You can use this account to access other digital services, such as checking your account balance, receiving a mini statement, and transferring funds, among others. Below given are some conditions you need to know before checking your post office account balance:
- Your mobile number must be registered with your post office savings account.
- To receive the OTP via SMS, the mobile number must be in an active state.
- CIF number and date of birth for mobile app registration must be kept handy.
Steps to check post office savings account balance via SMS
To know your post office savings account balance, type 'REGISTER' and send it to 7738062873 from your mobile number registered with your savings/current account.
Once your mobile number is registered for SMS facility, you can check your post office savings account balance by typing 'BAL' and sending it to 7738062873. You can also generate a mini statement of your account by typing 'MINI' and sending it to 7738062873.
Steps to check post office savings account balance via missed call service
To get registered for missed call banking service, dial 8424054994 from your registered mobile number.
Once your mobile number is registered successfully you give a missed call to the same number for balance enquiry and mini statement.
Steps to check post office savings account balance via IPPB mobile app
- Download the IPPB mobile app on your mobile and enter your account number, Customer ID (CIF)/Date of Birth and registered mobile number.
- Now you will get an OTP on your registered mobile number which you need to verify.
- Upon effective authentication of OTP, your registration will be successfull.
- Now set an MPIN in order to sign in to the app.
- Under the dashboard section, you can check your post office savings account balance.
Steps to check post office savings account balance via phone banking
- From your registered mobile number dial 155299 (toll-free) and follow the IVRS commands.
- Now select a language as per your preference and select your savings account details.
- Now select the 'Get account balance' option to know your account balance.

- Scan the QR code printed on the QR card of the post office.
- You will now receive an OTP on your registered mobile number, which you need to verify.
- Now enter the OVD authentication, and you will get the account balance on your mobile phone successfully.
Steps to check post office savings account balance via online banking
To check your post office savings account balance via online banking you need to first create an account at the official website of India Post. Upon successfull account activation process you will get a User ID and Password which you can change later. Now use the User ID and Password and follow the steps below to check your post office savings account balance online.
- Sign in to the DoP e-banking portal and enter your User ID/Password.
- You will now get an OTP on your registered mobile number.
- Enter the OTP to verify it
- You have now signed in to your account effectively. Simply select the Accounts tab, and your account's available balance will be displayed on your device screen.
Note
If you forgot your Internet Banking username, you can contact your local post office to be re-registered. If you forgot your login password, simply click the 'Forgot Password' link on the page to generate a new one, which will be sent to your registered email address. If you don't enter the User ID and Password promptly, the session will time out, and you'll have to start over from the beginning.
