A Pension Payment Order number (PPO number) is a 12 digit reference number that will help people to get a pension and the number is issued after the retirement of the employee.
PPO Benefits
To get a pension one should have the PPO number, and if someone forgets the number, the pension can halt. It is an essential tool to submit your life proof, which one needs to submit each year, to get the pension benefits. Without life proof or life certificate, one can stop having the pension further. Using the PPO number, a retired employee can transfer his/her pension account from one branch to another. If one has any kind of pension-related complaints, via the PPO number, one can file a complaint online.
The PPO number is important for any communication with Central Pension Accounting Office (CPAO). CPAO is an 'intermediary link between pension sanctioning authority and pension paying authority (Pay and Accounts Office) and the pension disbursing bank'.
PPO number 'Nirbadh Sewa'
Under EPFO's 'Seamless Service' or Nirbadh Sewa', a person can have the Pension Payment Order (PPO) number on the day of his/her retirement.
However, on the EPFO website, under the 'Know Your PPO Number' you can find the number. To get the PPO number, go to the EPFO website (epfindia.gov.in) and click on the 'Pensioners Portal' in the 'Online Services' window. On the new page, one needs to go to the 'Know Your PPO Number' option and put the bank account number which is linked to the pension fund. One can use the particular PF number or the member ID. After submitting the details and one can find the PPO number.
PPO Enquiry
One can do PPO Enquiry online, in addition to other EPF and pension-related queries. On the EPFO website (epfindia.gov.in), one will have to go to the 'Pensioners' Portal' on the home page. After that, as a new page will open, you can avail of the PPO Enquiry or Payment Enquiry link facility. Here you will have to choose the issued office and the office ID. Enter the PPO number and the date of birth and click on Submit for the PPO-enquiry.
As the CPAO informs, "Anybody can know the status of any particular PPO by using the link "know your status". Moreover, pensioners have been provided the facility of downloading the copy of PPOs and subsequent amendments issued by CPAO by using login and password after getting themselves registered on CPAO website", which is - www.cpao.nic.in.
