The risk of unfortunate incidents always remain, doesn't matter how secure and safe we play in our life. There are many cases of unfortunate incidents, where we lose our assets, health, and sometimes our or our family members' life. Just like not many people are aware of the free accidental insurance on the Debit/Credit card by the banks, there is also insurance against, death, property loss/damage, or health damage caused by a Gas Cylinder blast in India. In general, people are not aware of this insurance or the compensation they claim over the LPG Gas cylinder blast. The reason behind this could be anything but lack of knowledge and awareness, claims are never or rarely filled, and the government's not able to spread this knowledge to masses are few strong ones.
Public Liability Policy for Oil Industries
This LPG gas insurance policy is similar to group insurance cover that is obtained by Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) and even dealers across India. OMCs such as Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL), Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL), and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) purchase comprehensive insurance policies under the 'Public Liability Policy for Oil Industries' in order to provide immediate relief to victims of LPG-related accidents. It applies to all LPG customers who have registered with OMCs.
Who are Covered?
OMCs' Public Liability Insurance Policy covers losses resulting from incidents in which LPG is the major cause of the fire, but not in situations where the primary cause of the fire is another source/reason in which LPG cylinders become consumed and explode. The policy now allows for the following:
(i)I Personal accident insurance coverage of Rs 6,00,000/- per individual in the event of death.
(ii) Covers up to Rs 30 lakh in medical expenditures per event, with a limit of Rs 2,000,000/- per individual.
(iii) In the event of property damage, it covers a maximum of Rs2,00,000/- per occurrence at authorized locations registered address of the customer
Customers are given a Safety and Insurance brochure in both Hindi and English, as well as regional languages, with a visual depiction by OMCs. Public Liability Insurance Policy information is also available in the public domain on the OMC's websites. OMCs also organize regular safety clinics and LPG panchayats to raise customer knowledge about safe LPG use, conservation techniques, and insurance information.
How to Claim?
- In the event of an accident, the distributor must be notified in writing by the victim or victim's family as soon as possible.
- The distributor then notifies the relevant Oil/Gas Company and Insurance Company.
- The Oil/Gas Companies assist the customer concerned or the next of kin in completing the processes of insurance claims originating from the accident.
- In addition to the foregoing, all LPG distributors have Third Party Liability Insurance in place to cover losses in the case of an LPG accident.
The PSU Oil Companies have taken out insurance coverage that covers all registered LPG users. To know more about the compensation Visit the relevant Gas Company official website or contact the nearest branch office.
