The strike at the Haryana plant started on Saturday, this was to force the company to recognize a new union.

According to reports there has been a loss of nearly 1,800 vehicles since Saturday. Production loss for half a day on Saturday resulted in a loss of 600 units. Since Sunday was a weekly holiday, there was no loss. And on Monday there was a loss of additional 1,200 cars.

The Maesar plant manufactures models like SX4, Dezire sedans, Swift and A-Star hatchbacks. The production at its Gurgaon plant, also in Haryana, has continued at a normal pace.

Though the company officials were engaged in negotiations with the strikers, no breakthrough has been made so far. The company maintains that the strike is illegal.

The striking workers from the Maruti Manesar plant are demanding recognition for their so-called 'Maruti Suzuki Employees Union'. As of now there is only one workers' union at the company, Maruti Udyog Kamgar Union, which is legally recognized by the company's management.

Maruti has earlier faced a strike during November 2000 to January 2001 period.

At 11.40 a.m., the stock of Maruti Suzuki was trading at Rs 1,222.90, 0.73% down from its previous close.
