
1. Challan 280: For payment of all such taxes, including self-assessment tax, advance tax, regular assessment tax, tax on distributed income to unit holders and tax on distributed profits of domestic company, challan no. 280 needs to be filled. The form can be downloaded from the website of department of Income Tax and a print out copy duly filled in can be submitted with the authorized banks.
However, as mandated for different tax types you need to fill in different Challans. Also, ensure filling of mandatory details such as PAN no. and others to avoid unnecessary efforts on your part.
2. Challan 281: Companies as well as non-company taxpayer category can deposit the tax deduction at source (TDS) or tax collected at source (TCS) by filling Challan no. 281. The form
that requires you to quote the TAN no. tax deduction account no. (TAN) should be specified correctly. As wrong mention of TAN attracts a penalty of Rs. 10,000/- as per section 272BB of I.T. Act, 1961. Also, for different tax types, you need to fill in separate challan.
3. Challan 282 : For depositing other taxes, including wealth tax, securities transaction tax (STT), gift tax, estate duty, interest tax, Expenditure/other tax and Hotel Receipt, form 282 needs to be filled. Caution has to be taken while filling some of the important details such as PAN no. As wrong entry attracts a penalty of Rs. 10,000 as per Section 272B of the IT Act 1961.
On depositing tax with the bank, ensure that the acknowledge receipt bears all such details BSR code of the bank branch, date of challan deposit and challan serial number. As all such details are to be specified in the income tax return.
4. Challan 283 : For depositing banking cash transaction tax as well as fringe benefit transaction (FBT), taxpayers need to deposit the duly filled in Challan 283.
To make payment of taxes less tedious for different taxpayer categories, RBI as per the PTI report has designated as many as 29 bank branches that include both public as well private sector banks to accept taxes in advance ahead of the due date. State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Allahabad Bank, Bank of Baroda, Oriental Bank of Commerce, Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank are the bank branches authorized for collecting tax.
Other banks authorized for the purpose include Andhra Bank, Bank of India, Bank of Maharashtra, Canara Bank, Central Bank of India, Corporation Bank, Dena Bank, IDBI Bank, Indian Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, Punjab & Sindh Bank, Syndicate Bank, UCO Bank, United Bank of India, Union Bank of India, Vijaya Bank, State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur, State Bank of Hyderabad, State Bank of Travancore, State Bank of Mysore and State Bank of Patiala.
RBI also suggested use of alternative modes such as selected branches of agency bank or online payment route to avoid the hassles and inconvenience associated with tax payment at a bank branch.
