India is likely to impose anti- dumping duty of up to USD 397 per tonne on a Chinese chemical used in construction and dyes industry, reported PTI.

The Directorate General of Antidumping and Allied Duties (DGAD), the investigation arm of the Commerce Industry, in its finding discovered that 'Sulphonated Naphthalene Formaldehyde', has been imported into India from China at rates lower than normal value, resulting in dumping. The move to impose duty would guard domestic players from importing this chemical due to its cheap rates.
I has been notified by the DGAD that the dumping has resulted in material injury to the domestic industry and has recommended the imposition of the definitive anti-dumping duty for a period of five years.
As a practice, the DGAD recommends and the Finance Ministry approves and imposes a duty. These duties are imposed under the multi-lateral WTO regime to ensure fair trade and provide a level-playing field to the domestic industry. They are not meant to restrict imports or cause an unjustified increase in cost of products.
