On an average, the Delhi Police has issued around 4,000 to 5,000 challans per day after the new motor vehicles act came into effect on 1 September, a PTI report said.

In total, 254 challans have been issued for drunk driving, 1,229 for driving without a seat belt, 4,097 for driving without helmet, 1,527 for dangerous driving and 2,698 for red-light violations, a senior officer told PTI.
Around 4,000-5,000 challans were issued on an average in a day till Friday for various traffic violations.
There has been a significant increase in penalties charged by the department on violations of traffic rules. While most states have implemented them, states like Telangana are yet to join in.
For driving without a license, the penalty is now increased to Rs 5,000 from the earlier Rs 500. Dangerous driving could result in imprisonment for 6 months to 1 year or a fine between Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 for the first offence and imprisonment of up to 2 years or fine of up to Rs 10,000 for the second offence.
Penalty on drunken driving is Rs 10,000 for the first time and Rs 15,000 on the second offence. It could also attract imprisonment order for a minimum of 6 months.
The minimum penalty to be charged on any traffic violation has been increased from Rs 50 to Rs 500.
