For new goods and services tax (GST) registration, authentication using aadhaar has been activated effective August 21, 2020, which will enhance ease of business, said a senior official.

"Aadhaar authentication for new registration would substantially enhance ease of doing businesses for genuine businesses," he said. "This measure is expected to facilitate genuine and honest taxpayers while at the same time keeping the fake and fraudulent entities away from GST," the official added.
Subsequently those opting for aadhaar authentication for GST registration, will be issued GST registration number within a matter of just 3 working days, doing away with the need for physical verification.
Nonetheless those who do not opt for aadhaar authentication for GST registration, will be issued GST registration only after physical verification of place of business or documents and the process may take as many as 21 working days or even more if the notice is issued, added the senior official.
Also, given the Covid 19 pandemic crisis, the officer if the situation so demand may ask for additional documents for the the pre-registration for physical verification of the premises.
The facility of applying for new GST registration via aadhaar authentication can be availed by all Indians. Further information on the features can be known by visiting the news and update section of the GST portal.
