Bharti Airtel, a prominent player in India's telecommunications sector, unveiled a groundbreaking initiative on Monday aimed at delivering uninterrupted connectivity to metro commuters in Kolkata.
The company announced its innovative plan to provide seamless network coverage in the city's first underwater metro passage, located beneath the Hooghly River. This pioneering move underscores Airtel's commitment to enhancing the customer experience and pushing technological boundaries.

Ahead of the official commercial launch of the service, Airtel has invested in deploying high-capacity nodes positioned 35 metres below the river's surface. This strategic infrastructure investment positions Airtel as the first operator to offer uninterrupted connectivity across the 4.8-kilometre stretch of Kolkata's East-West Metro corridor, linking Howrah Maidan with the Esplanade.
To realise this transformative service, Airtel has established fibre connectivity along the entire 4.8-kilometre route, spanning key stations including Howrah Maidan, Howrah Station, Mahakaran, and Esplanade. High-capacity nodes strategically positioned at each station ensure seamless connectivity, enabling commuters to enjoy blazing 5G speeds, uninterrupted voice calls, and seamless data transmission during their daily commute.
Ayan Sarkar, CEO of Bharti Airtel, said: The company's dedication to exceeding customer expectations through innovative solutions. Sarkar emphasised that the provision of under-river tunnel connectivity will significantly enhance the commuting experience, offering commuters access to high-definition video streaming, gaming, multiple chatting platforms, instant photo uploads, and more. This technological advancement will enable commuters to stay connected and productive while traversing the scenic underwater stretch below the river Ganga.
India's first underwater metro, hailed as an engineering marvel, connects the bustling city of Kolkata with Howrah. The completion of this ambitious project signifies a significant milestone in India's transportation infrastructure and is poised to revolutionise the way commuters navigate the bustling metropolis. The underwater metro is slated to open to the public imminently, offering a seamless and efficient mode of transportation for residents and visitors alike.
As Airtel continues to push the boundaries of innovation and customer service, its pioneering initiative to deliver seamless connectivity in Kolkata's underwater metro corridor reaffirms the company's position as a leader in India's telecommunications landscape. By harnessing cutting-edge technology and infrastructure investments, Airtel aims to enhance connectivity, convenience, and productivity for millions of commuters across the country.
