A Mumbai-based Akasa flight with 166 people onboard was forced to make an emergency landing at the Varanasi airport after receiving a bomb threat on social media. The airline initiated all required emergency procedures and alerted all airports it operates from about the threat, which was later categorised as non-specific.
On Friday, a Mumbai-based Akasa aircraft carrying 166 passengers was forced to make an emergency landing at Varanasi airport due to a bomb threat received on social media. The airline spokesperson confirmed the incident, stating that flight QP 1498's captain had received an emergency alert from the Varanasi Air Traffic Controller and subsequently followed all necessary emergency procedures before safely landing the plane in Varanasi.

The alarming situation began when Akasa Air received a bomb threat message on social media around 1130 am. Immediately after receiving this threat, local police in Mumbai were informed, and steps were initiated for filing an FIR (First Information Report), as per the spokesperson's statement.
Emergency Response Mechanism Activated
In response to this potential security breach, the airline activated its emergency response mechanism. As part of their established security protocol, they promptly alerted all of the 16 airports from which it operates about the impending bomb threat. This proactive measure ensured heightened vigilance across various locations where Akasa flights might be present or scheduled for arrival or departure.
A Non-Specific Threat
The spokesperson later added that upon further investigation and assessment by relevant authorities, this ominous warning was eventually categorised as a non-specific threat. Despite its vague nature, such threats are taken very seriously by airlines and aviation authorities alike given their potential implications for passenger safety.
Safety of Passengers Ensured
According to official reports from Akasa Airlines, there were exactly 166 individuals onboard during this harrowing experience – comprising 159 passengers including one infant plus six operating crew members aboard flight QP-1498 flying between Mumbai and Varanasi.
Aircraft Declared Safe After Thorough Checks
Puneet Gupta, Director of Varanasi Airport, reassured all concerned parties that after a thorough security check of the aircraft in question, nothing objectionable was found. Consequently, the aircraft was declared safe. This incident underscores the importance and effectiveness of robust emergency response mechanisms to ensure passenger safety even under potential threat conditions.
In conclusion, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the various challenges faced by airlines in maintaining security and ensuring passenger safety amidst an increasingly digital world where threats can be issued from virtually anywhere at any time. The swift and efficient handling of this situation by Akasa Airlines and relevant authorities not only ensured immediate safety for those onboard flight QP-1498 but also minimised disruption across their network thanks to their prompt communication with other airports. It stands testament to the fact that vigilance, preparedness and effective execution of emergency protocols are paramount in dealing with such situations successfully.
