AMD's stock skyrocketed over 23% after the company announced a massive multi-year partnership with OpenAI, which is one of the biggest deals in the global AI hardware space. The collaboration will provide AMD an edge against its rival chipmaker Nvidia.

AMD and OpenAI Partnership Details
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), the American semiconductor company based in Santa Clara, California, has signed a multi-billion-dollar AI chip supply agreement with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. As part of this deal, OpenAI will deploy up to 6 gigawatts of AMD's Instinct GPUs beginning in 2026 to power its next-generation AI infrastructure.
According to the official press release, "The first 1 gigawatt phase will start with AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs, followed by future generations of processors. The partnership will also allow OpenAI to acquire up to a 10% stake in AMD, depending on performance milestones and share-price targets. "
Under the agreement, OpenAI will partner closely with AMD as one of its main technology and computing partners. The two companies will work together to build and expand large-scale AI infrastructure using AMD's powerful processors. The collaboration will begin with the AMD Instinct MI450 GPU series which is a next-generation chip designed specifically for handling massive AI workloads and will later extend to future versions of AMD's AI hardware and software solutions.
AMD Share Price Performance
On October 6, AMD shares closed at $203.71 on the NASDAQ, with a sharp jump of $39.04, or 23.71%, in a single trading session after the OpenAI partnership announcement. In after-hours trading, the stock continued its upward momentum, rising further to up 1.53%. Over the past five days, AMD shares have surged by 26.72%, while in the last six months, the stock has delivered multibagger returns with 143.56% gains.
AMD's Financials
AMD's financial performance is currently at record highs. In Q2 2025, the company reported revenues of $7.7 billion, up 32% year-on-year, with a net income of $872 million. Earlier, in Q1 2025, AMD posted $7.44 billion in revenue, rising 36% YoY, and $1.57 billion in net income. Its annual revenue has now reached $29.6 billion as of September 2025.
Strong sales in data centre chips, AI processors, and client CPUs, particularly the new Zen 5 series, are the major factors behind this growth. The OpenAI deal is expected to bring tens of billions of dollars in new revenue for AMD in the coming years.
