Bank Holiday On Wednesday: The start of 2025 is packed with host of holidays for Indian banks. The first day of New Year is a public holiday for many cities, and accordingly, banks are closed on January 1st in these regions. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has released the bank holidays list on a monthly basis for 2025.
As per RBI's holiday list, banks are closed in cities like Aizawl, Chennai, Gangtok, Imphal, Itanagar, Kohima, Kolkata, and Shillong due to the celebration of New Year's Day/Loosong/Namsoong.

That being said, banks are open in cities like Agartala, Ahmedabad, Belapur, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Guwahati, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kochi, Mumbai, Lucknow, Nagpur, New Delhi, Panaji, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Shimla, Srinagar, and Thiruvananthapuram on January 1st.
For the month of January 2025, RBI has identified special holidays under two categories namely Holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act; and Banks' Closing of Accounts.
Overall, in January 2025, there are a total of 8 special holidays due to key occasions. While the banks will be closed on January 11th and 25th due to second and fourth Saturdays. All banks are closed on all Sundays of the month. This time the national holiday Republic Day falls on Sunday.
Bank holidays in India 2025, vary from state-to-state and city-to-city, though there are numerous Public Holidays in the year 2025 which are applicable throughout the country. Some of these holidays include Republic Day (Jan 26), Independence Day (Aug 15) and Gandhi Jayanti (Oct 2). Apart from these, there are important religious and festival holidays such as Diwali, Dussehra, Christmas, Eid, Guru Nanak Jayanthi, Good Friday, Ganesh Chaturthi, Budh Purnima etc.
Also, Banks are closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month in addition to the above-mentioned bank holidays. The fifth Saturday of a month with five Saturdays is a working day for banks. In the past, banks would only open for a half-day on Saturdays.
