Bank Holidays 2025: Indian banks are going to be closed for three days from May 12 to May 18. Occasions like Buddha Purnima to Sikkim State Day are queued for celebration, and many cities will practice public holidays, including closing of schools.
For scheduled commercial banks, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) decides on holidays listed under the Negotiable Instruments Act and Banks' Closing of Accounts categories.

Bank Holiday On May 12:
Indian banks will be closed on May 12 for the celebration of Buddha Purnima, which is also popularly called Vesak.
Banks will be closed in cities like Agartala, Aizawl, Belapur, Bhopal, Dehradun, Itanagar, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Nagpur, Mumbai, New Delhi, Raipur, Ranchi, Shimla, and Srinagar.
In other cities, banks will be opened.
Bank Holiday On May 16:
Banks will be closed on May 16 due to the celebration of Sikkim State Day. Hence, banks will be closed in cities like Gangtok.
Bank Holiday On May 18:
Since May 18 is a Sunday, all banks in India will be closed. Sundays are default holidays for banks.
Meanwhile, banks will be open on May 13, May 14, May 15, and May 17.

Buddha Purnima 2025:
Buddha Purnima is celebrated to honour the birth, enlightenment, and death of Gautama Buddha, who was the founder of Buddhism.
Devotees visit temples, offer prayers, and participate in meditation sessions. Many people also perform acts of kindness and charity, as per the Paytm blog. It is believed that on this day, the Buddha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, symbolizing the path to spiritual awakening.
Sikkim State Day:
Sikkim State Day is celebrated on May 16, to commemorate the formation of Sikkim as the 22nd state of India in 1975, as per Wikipedia.
According to PIB FAQs, Sikkim, a state in India, is located in the northeastern part of the country, in the eastern Himalayas. It is one of the smallest states in India. Sikkim is bordered by the Tibet Autonomous Region of China to the north and northeast, by Bhutan to the southeast, by the Indian state of West Bengal to the south, and by Nepal to the west. The capital is Gangtok, in the southeastern part of the state.
A part of the Eastern Himalaya, Sikkim is notable for its biodiversity, including alpine and subtropical climates, as well as being a host to Kangchenjunga, the highest peak in India and third highest on Earth. Sikkim's capital and largest city is Gangtok.
