The state government has announced the development of a new high-capacity data centre designed to support 2,300 concurrent users for artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) applications. This initiative was revealed by an official on the sidelines of the Data Science 2024 Conference. The move aims to bolster the practical application of data science by providing essential infrastructure for advanced data analysis.

According to the official, who preferred to remain anonymous, the state already boasts an advanced infrastructure capable of supporting over 5,000 users in real-time. "One more data centre with a focus on AI and ML is being built with a capacity of 2,300 concurrent users," he stated. This expansion is in response to the growing demand and to enhance capacity. The new data centre will share the data load with the existing facility once it becomes operational.
The primary beneficiaries of this new facility will be government operations, although there are plans to extend access to some startups for advanced data analytics purposes. This approach not only aims to improve government services but also fosters innovation and growth within the startup ecosystem by providing access to state-of-the-art data processing capabilities.
Officials from West Bengal Electronics Industry Development Corporation Limited (Webel) emphasized the importance of robust infrastructure for effective data science. They highlighted that high-performance computing services, secure data centres, and comprehensive data management systems are crucial for harnessing the full potential of data science applications.
This development underscores the state government's commitment to leveraging technology for improved governance and support of emerging businesses. By investing in high-capacity data centres focused on AI and ML, the government is setting a foundation for advanced research, development, and practical application of cutting-edge technologies.
