The Central Government's PM Suryaghar Muft Bijli Yojana has officially begun in Karnataka, which will help BESCOM consumers to install rooftop solar units and receive attractive subsidies of up to Rs. 78,000. The main purpose of the scheme is to help households cut electricity bills and shift to clean renewable energy.

PM Suryaghar Rooftop Solar Scheme
The PM Suryaghar Scheme is a cost-effective home energy solution under which a rooftop solar system of 5 kW can provide electricity for nearly 20 years.
The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is a flagship government scheme launched on February 15, 2024, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to promote rooftop solar power across India. The scheme is expected to install rooftop solar panels in 1 crore households by March 2027.
Under this program, households receive a subsidy covering up to 40% of the installation cost of solar panels ranging from Rs. 30,000 for 1 kW systems to Rs. 78,000 for installations above 3 kW. In addition to subsidies, eligible households can get a free electricity supply of up to 300 units per month generated from their rooftop solar systems. By March 2025, over 10 lakh installations were expected, scaling up to 1 crore households by 2027.
Subsidy Slabs Under the PM Suryaghar Scheme
Households installing rooftop solar panels will receive a central government subsidy based on system size:
- 1 kW: Rs. 30,000 subsidy
- 2 kW: Rs. 60,000 subsidy
- 3 kW and above: Rs. 78,000 maximum subsidy
Consumers can also choose solar capacity depending on their monthly electricity usage. For instance, up to 100 units, 1 kW is recommended, and for 101-200 units, 2 kW, and for above 200 units, 3 kW or more is recommended.
Who Can Benefit from PM Suryaghar Scheme in Karnataka?
The scheme is open to all BESCOM domestic consumers, with extra incentives for SC/ST households, BPL families and consumers opting for net metering, enabling them to sell excess power back to the grid.
Households can save nearly Rs. 18,000 per year and enjoy a 25-year system life along with five-year maintenance support.
How to Apply for PM Suryaghar Solar in Karnataka
Since electricity costs are rising day by day, the PM Suryaghar Solar scheme is a better option for long-term savings and cleaner and sustainable energy usage. Authorities believe that the adoption is expected to grow rapidly, especially in urban areas like Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mangaluru and Hubballi-Dharwad.
Residents can complete registration online by following the steps below:
Step 1: Visit pmsuryaghar.gov.in.
Step 2: Select BESCOM as the DISCOM.
