Big news coming from Indian Railways which is planning to introduce a new ticket policy that allows passengers to change the date of their confirmed train tickets online without paying any extra fee. The new system will likely come into effect from January 2026, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in an interview with NDTV.

Current Provision Of Date Change
Currently, passengers who want to make any modification in their travel date have to cancel their confirmed ticket and book a new one. However this leads to deductions in their ticket prices based on the timing of cancellation. This process, Vaishnaw said, was "unfair and not in the interest of passengers."
How the New Train Ticket Date Change Policy Works?
Under the new rule, passengers can reschedule their train journey online directly through the IRCTC website or mobile app, without any cancellation or service charge. However, the availability of confirmed seats for the new date will depend on seat vacancy and train demand.
If the new train ticket falls under a higher fare category, travellers will have to pay the fare difference. This new train rule will provide flexibility and will help millions of passengers manage last-minute travel changes without financial loss.
Ashwini Vaishnaw Confirms Implementation Orders Issued
According to Minister Vaishnaw, the Railways Ministry has already issued orders to implement the new feature. "This system is designed to make the railway experience more passenger-centric and reduce the stress of cancellations," he said in the NDTV interview.
The new rule is expected to benefit crores of Indian Railways passengers, particularly those who frequently travel for work, emergencies, or personal reasons and face unexpected plan changes.
Railways Enhancing Online Ticketing Experience
The new ticket policy comes with Indian Railways' digital transformation goals, which include improving e-ticketing, introducing automatic refunds, and providing real-time train tracking. These steps aim to enhance convenience and promote a smoother, tech-enabled travel experience for passengers across the country.
The decision has brought some major relief to the passengers and is being appreciated by travellers. Many believe this new rule will encourage more people to choose trains over flights or buses for long-distance travel, thanks to the newly added flexibility and cost savings. Indian railway is taking a step forward by coming up with their customer friendly and transparent system.
