The commencement of the bullet train project in Maharashtra's Palghar and Thane districts marks a significant step forward in the development of the 508-km-long Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor. The National High Speed Rail Corporation Ltd (NHSRCL) announced on Tuesday that the construction activities are part of package-C3, extending from Shilphata to Zaroli village on the Maharashtra-Gujarat border. This initiative is set to enhance connectivity and significantly reduce travel time between the two major cities.

According to NHSRCL, the geotechnical investigation for the entire 135 km stretch is on the verge of completion. The construction has also begun on two mountain tunnels within this region, alongside the initiation of pier foundation work at various locations. Moreover, casting yards are under development for both full span and segment casting of girders, indicating a swift progression in the project's infrastructure setup.
Package C-3, spanning 135.45 km, is a crucial segment of the bullet train project. It encompasses viaducts and bridges over a distance of 24.027 km and earth structures covering 5.361 km. The package includes 36 bridges and crossings, with 12 being steel bridges. Additionally, the segment features six mountain tunnels and one cut-and-cover tunnel. Notably, this section will facilitate critical river crossings over Ulhas, Vaitarna, and Jagani rivers.
Furthermore, three bullet train stations are planned within this section at Thane, Virar, and Boisar, enhancing the accessibility and convenience for commuters. In a groundbreaking move, NHSRCL has also initiated the construction of India's first undersea tunnel. This 21km tunnel will connect underground stations at Bandra-Kurla Complex in Mumbai with Shilphata in Thane district. The construction employs three boring machines for approximately 16km of the tunnel, while the remaining 5km will utilize the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM).
Funding and Financial Overview
The total investment for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor is estimated at Rs 1.08 lakh crore. The funding model includes a contribution of Rs 10,000 crore from the Government of India and Rs 5,000 crore each from the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra. The majority of the project's financing comes from Japan through a loan at an interest rate of 0.1 per cent.
This ambitious project not only signifies a leap towards modernizing India's transportation infrastructure but also strengthens bilateral relations between India and Japan through strategic economic cooperation. With its completion, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor is expected to revolutionize travel dynamics between these two pivotal cities, offering a fast, efficient, and sustainable mode of transport.
