The Cabinet has given the green light to continue the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) under Niti Aayog, extending its scope and budget to Rs 2,750 crore until March 31, 2028. AIM 2.0 aims to enhance India's innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem, building on the successes of AIM 1.0 initiatives like Atal Tinkering Labs and Atal Incubation Centers.

Focus on Innovation and Entrepreneurship
AIM 2.0 represents a shift in strategy by piloting new initiatives to address gaps in the ecosystem. It plans to scale successful projects through collaboration with central and state governments, industry, academia, and communities. The mission seeks to improve India's innovation landscape by increasing input, enhancing success rates, and boosting output quality.
India currently ranks 39th on the Global Innovation Index and boasts the third-largest startup ecosystem globally. AIM 2.0 is expected to further elevate India's global competitiveness by fostering better jobs, innovative products, and impactful services across various sectors.
Language Inclusivity and Regional Focus
AIM 2.0 introduces the Language Inclusive Program of Innovation (LIPI) to overcome language barriers, establishing 30 vernacular innovation centres. The programme will also develop tailored templates for regions like Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, North Eastern states, and aspirational districts where a significant portion of India's population resides.
To support these efforts, 2,500 new Atal Tinkering Labs will be established for template development. This initiative aims to create a more inclusive and robust innovation environment across diverse regions of India.
The continuation of AIM is poised to significantly contribute to India's development by nurturing an environment conducive to innovation and entrepreneurship. This initiative is expected to drive economic growth by creating opportunities for high-impact services and products across multiple sectors.
