The Union government has sanctioned a Rs 887 crore project to develop a marina in Mumbai Harbour. This initiative aims to boost maritime tourism and create over 2,000 jobs while enhancing public access to coastal infrastructure.
The Union government has sanctioned a project to establish a top-tier marina in Mumbai Harbour, with an estimated budget of Rs 887 crore. This initiative will be executed using a hybrid development model. The Mumbai Port Authority will contribute approximately Rs 470 crore for the core marina infrastructure, while a private entity will invest around Rs 417 crore for onshore facilities.

The marina, spanning nearly 12 hectares, will accommodate 424 yachts up to 30 metres long. Essential marine infrastructure will include an approach trestle, piled breakwater, service platforms, pontoons, and gangways. These features are designed to ensure safe and efficient yacht operations.
Investment and Employment Opportunities
The ministry has given the green light to the port authority's investment plan. Tenders have been issued, with the bidding process set to conclude on December 29, 2025. This project is anticipated to create over 2,000 jobs in areas such as marina operations, cruise services, hospitality, and related sectors.
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal stated that the project aims to develop world-class infrastructure. "It will help position Mumbai as a global maritime tourism hub while advancing India’s broader blue economy goals," he added.
Enhancing Public Access and Tourism
The marina project is also intended to enhance public access to the waterfront. It aims to bolster Mumbai's status as a key centre for maritime tourism and cruise traffic. By encouraging private sector involvement in coastal infrastructure, it seeks to open new avenues for investment and employment.
The initiative is expected to facilitate private sector participation in coastal infrastructure development. This aligns with efforts to strengthen Mumbai's position as a major hub for maritime tourism and cruise traffic.
In conclusion, this ambitious project not only aims to create world-class facilities but also seeks to integrate public use of the waterfront. It promises significant contributions towards employment generation and economic growth in the region.
