As the much-anticipated Chhath Puja approaches, millions in the states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and beyond are gearing up for a four-day celebration dedicated to Lord Surya, the Sun God. This ancient Hindu festival, rooted in the Vedic period, holds deep cultural and historical significance, drawing devotees from far and wide.
In light of the festival, certain states have declared school holidays for November 19 and November 20 this year. The decision affects schools in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Delhi. Although Chhath Puja isn't officially listed as a Gazetted holiday, schools exercise their discretion to mark these days as restricted holidays.

The Chhath Puja festivities kick off with "Nahay Khay" on November 17, where devotees take a holy bath, clean their homes, and prepare a pure satwik meal for the deity. The following day, "Lohanda and Kharna" or Panchami, is observed with devotees abstaining from even a sip of water until the evening when they break their fast with "rasiav" made of jaggery and roti.
The main event, "Chhath Puja, Sandhya Arghya," falls on November 19, marked by the offering of prasad and arghya to the setting sun. This is followed by "Usha Arghya, Parana Day" on November 20, where devotees break their fast, concluding the four-day celebration.
Historical Roots and Legends
Chhath Puja's origins trace back to ancient Hindu scriptures, with its roots firmly planted in the Vedic period. Legend has it that Karna, the child of the Sun and the king of Anga Desh, performed Chhath Puja, giving the festival historical significance. It's also believed that Draupadi observed the fast to overcome obstacles in her and the Pandavas' lives, while Sita performed the puja and was blessed with her sons Luv and Kush.
Significance of Chhath Puja
Chhath Puja serves as a profound expression of gratitude to the Sun God, seen as the source of life on Earth. Devotees seek the blessings of Lord Surya for the well-being, prosperity, and happiness of their families. It's also a time for spiritual cleansing and seeking forgiveness for past sins.
Rituals and Celebrations
The four-day festival is marked by meticulous rituals. Devotees gather at the banks of rivers or other water bodies, clad in traditional attire, to offer prayers to the rising and setting sun. The first two days involve purification rituals and abstaining from water, while the third and fourth days focus on making prasad and offering arghya to the sun, followed by breaking the fast.
Community Harmony and Folk Songs
Chhath Puja is not just a religious celebration but also a time for communal harmony and family gatherings. The air is filled with the melodious tunes of folk songs, adding to the festive atmosphere. The rituals are a blend of devotion, tradition, and cultural heritage, creating an immersive experience for all participants.
As Chhath Puja 2023 approaches, the excitement and fervour among devotees continue to grow. It's not just a festival; it's a spiritual journey, a cultural celebration, and a time for families to come together in reverence of the Sun God, seeking blessings for a brighter and prosperous future.
