The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) recently assessed the progress of the Navi Mumbai International Airport, which is set to open in June. The meeting, led by CIDCO's vice chairman Vijay Singh, included stakeholders like Jeet Adani from Adani Airport Holdings Ltd. They focused on the airport's readiness for its initial operations phase.

During the meeting, emphasis was placed on completing the airside, landside, and terminal infrastructure to ensure a smooth inauguration and subsequent commercial operations. The Adani Group, a key concessionaire, assured that all parties are diligently working to meet the deadlines set for these developments.
Operational Readiness and Licensing
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has already issued the necessary Airport Information Publication (AIP) for the new facility. Inspections by DGCA teams are ongoing to grant the Aerodrome License. Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd confirmed that airside infrastructure work is complete, while aerodrome licensing and security clearance processes are underway.
Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) trials are being conducted regularly. These trials test systems, logistics, and coordination among various agencies to ensure everything functions smoothly once operations begin.
Connectivity and Infrastructure
The meeting also reviewed connectivity to the new airport. CIDCO highlighted that landside access infrastructure is crucial for seamless passenger and cargo movement. This infrastructure is being developed in collaboration with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Relevant agencies have been instructed to expedite completion of approach roads before the airport's opening.
Several airlines have already requested flight slots at the new airport. A committee from DGCA is expected to finalise slot allocations soon, ensuring a well-organised start to flight operations.
Future Capacity and Economic Impact
The Navi Mumbai International Airport is a greenfield project being developed in phases. Once fully operational, it will handle 90 million passengers and 3.2 million tonnes of cargo annually. Phase 1 will accommodate 20 million passengers and 0.8 million tonnes of cargo each year.
This initial phase includes a Code-F compliant runway with double parallel taxiways, Terminal T1, cargo terminals, and modern aviation infrastructure. As Phase 1 nears completion and regulatory processes advance as planned, NMIA is set to become a vital aviation hub.
Regular fortnightly progress review meetings are held by CIDCO to ensure timely completion of the project. The airport aims to ease congestion at Mumbai's existing airport while boosting regional economic growth.
