The Himachal Pradesh government plans to allocate Rs 3,500 crore for compensating and rehabilitating landowners affected by the Kangra airport expansion. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced this on Monday. The compensation process will begin with the distribution of funds to landowners in Jugehar village, located in the Shahpur area of Kangra district.

According to Sukhu, the landowners in Jugehar have expressed their approval of the government's decision to provide compensation. This move addresses a long-standing demand from the community. A total of Rs 32.50 crore is earmarked for disbursement to these landowners.
Tourism Boost and Economic Growth
The expansion of Kangra Airport is a major focus for the current state administration. It aims to enhance tourism in the region significantly. The government envisions Kangra district becoming the Tourism Capital of Himachal Pradesh through this development.
As part of the airport's expansion, the runway will be extended from 1,376 meters to 3,010 meters. This extension will allow A320 aircraft to operate at the airport, increasing its capacity and connectivity.
Employment Opportunities
Sukhu highlighted that expanding Kangra Airport would create numerous job opportunities. It will also foster self-employment prospects, contributing to economic prosperity for Kangra district residents.
The initiative is expected to bring substantial benefits to the local economy by attracting more tourists and facilitating better air travel options. This development aligns with the state's broader goals of boosting tourism and economic growth.
The compensation and rehabilitation efforts are crucial steps in ensuring that affected landowners are adequately supported during this transition. The government's commitment to addressing their needs reflects its dedication to balanced regional development.
