The weather conditions in Delhi are intense, with poor air quality, unbending cold, and dense to bleak visibility. Delhi continues to be smokey, and daily commutes have taken a major hit. In a two-day span, nearly 1000 flights have been delayed and more than 200 have faced cancellation at Delhi airport. On December 16, the airport issued a fresh advisory that operations are gradually improving but still face disruptions.
Delhi Airport Flight Update:

As per reports, on Tuesday, more than 200 flights were delayed at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, while hundreds of them were cancelled as well in the early hours.
Yesterday alone, about 800 flights were delayed and 220 were cancelled as visibility dropped to 50 meters, making it difficult for arrivals and departures.
However, on Tuesday, the visibility seems to have improved to 600 meters.
Delhi Airport: Flight Status:
Air passengers can check their flight status at the below-mentioned link:
https://www.newdelhiairport.in/live-flight-information/
All you have to do is select whether your journey is arrival or departure and then select the airline or flight number. Some of the flights that are currently cancelled are:
- Indigo Flight 6E 6602 to Bhopal
- Air India Flight AI 1705 to Bhopal; Air India Flight AI 415 to Nagpur, and Air India Flight AI 2975 to Mumbai.
- Indigo Flight 6E 6796 to Hyderabad and Air India AI 1729 Flight to Raipur is also cancelled.
Majority of cancelled flights are either Indigo or Air India.
Delhi Airport Advisory:
The latest notification by Delhi Airport is that the flight operations are running smooth, however, a few departures and arrivals may still be affected.
It added, "Rest assured, our on-ground officials are available across terminals to assist passengers and provide necessary support."
Few hours ago, the airport assured that the flight operations are improving steadily, but disruption may persist for certain departures and arrivals.
Indigo Delhi Airport Advisory:
On December 16, Indigo issued an advisory saying, As winter sets in, early mornings across Northern India can bring fog that may occasionally slow down flight movements. We wanted to share this gentle heads-up in advance, so you can plan with ease and check your flight status before heading to the airport."
Air India Delhi Airport Advisory:
The last notification by Air India was on December 15. It said, "Dense fog enveloping Delhi and parts of Northern India early this morning caused flight disruptions across airlines, leading to significant air traffic congestion at the Delhi Airport and parking bay constraints, among multiple other challenges. Regrettably, several Air India flights had to be delayed and/or cancelled, which had a cascading, network-wide impact on our flight schedules as a result. While such unavoidable conditions are beyond airline control, our teams are working around the clock to assist affected guests with rebookings or full refunds if their flights were cancelled."
Air India said that the IMD forecasts similar fog conditions on December 16 with significantly reduced visibility expected, especially in the morning hours. Hence, few selected flights could be cancelled.
IMD Weather Forecast For Delhi:
IMD predicts that dense to very dense fog is likely to prevail during the early morning hours of December 16th across several parts of the country, including Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi-NCR, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, and parts of the Northeast (Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura).
It said, severely reduced visibility may lead to disruptions in road, rail, and air travel, increasing the risk of accidents and delays.
Overall, for the day, minimum temperatures are likely to be above normal about 2°C during next 24 hours and fall by 1-2°C thereafter. As a result, Minimum temperatures are likely to be normal (-1.5 to 1.5°C) thereafter. Maximum temperatures are likely to be above normal (1.6 to 3.0°C) during next 24 hours and normal (-1.5 to 1.5°C) thereafter.
IMD Safety Advisory:
- Drive at reduced speed
- Use fog lights or low-beam headlights
- Maintain safe distance from vehicles ahead
- Avoid unnecessary travel during peak fog hours
- Stay updated with official weather and traffic advisories
Delhi AQI:
If the foggy conditions in Delhi seem to be improving, its air quality continues to be a cause of concern.
As per government's SAMEER app, the current air quality indicator of the city is 373 which is titled as 'Very Poor'. In some places like Ashok Vihar, Bawana, DTU, Jahangirpuri, and Mundka continues to be above 400, which is severe.
