Delhi airports runway 10/28, closed for maintenance, is on track to be completed by January 19, aiming to reduce fog-related flight disruptions. Despite adverse weather conditions, no flight diversions were reported on Tuesday.
In a significant development, the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has informed the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) that the ongoing maintenance work on the closed runway 10/28 is expected to be completed by January 19, paving the way for inspection by the aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

Runway Closure and Fog-Related Disruptions
The closure of runway 10/28, which is equipped with CAT III-compliant technology enabling operations in low visibility conditions, has come under scrutiny due to the recent fog-related disruptions that have affected a substantial number of flights in Delhi. On Tuesday alone, over 50 flights were delayed due to adverse weather conditions, although there were no diversions.
Reasons for Delay in Runway Completion
Following a directive from Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia to expedite the operationalization of runway 10/28, DIAL has attributed the delay in maintenance work to several factors. These include disruptions in the supply chain for raw materials due to anti-pollution measures in Delhi, delayed supply of imported lights, technical issues with signage that necessitated replacements, software configuration problems, and unexpected challenges during cable laying.
DIAL's Commitment and Airport Operations
Despite the challenges, DIAL has reaffirmed its commitment to completing the project as soon as possible and aims to finalize all activities by January 19 for DGCA inspection. The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in Delhi currently has four runways, with three of them, including the CAT III-compliant runway 11L/29R, being operational. The airport handles approximately 1,300 flights daily.
DGCA's Measures to Minimize Disruptions
Amid the fog-related disruptions, the DGCA has taken steps to minimize the impact on passengers and ensure smooth operations at airports. Airlines have been instructed to provide accurate and real-time information regarding flight delays, and airport staff have been sensitized to communicate effectively with passengers during such disruptions.
The completion of runway 10/28 maintenance work and its subsequent operationalization will significantly enhance the capacity and efficiency of Delhi's airport operations, particularly during challenging weather conditions. The collaborative efforts of DIAL, MoCA, and DGCA, along with the cooperation of airlines and airport staff, are crucial in ensuring minimal inconvenience to passengers and maintaining the safety and reliability of air travel.
