Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in New Delhi will temporarily close Runway 28/10 from mid-June to mid-September 2025 to carry out an upgrade of its Instrument Landing System (ILS), according to media sources. The runway closure is expected to impact flight operations, with reports indicating that approximately 100 flights could be cancelled or rescheduled each day for nearly three months starting in June.
IGI Airport: 100 Daily Flights to Be Cancelled from Delhi for Three Months, June to September 2025
Runway 28/10 at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) is scheduled to be closed from mid-June to mid-September 2025. The timing avoids the peak travel season and aligns with expected changes in wind direction. The temporary runway closure could result in approximately 100 daily flight cancellations or schedule changes.

Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu confirmed the decision on Friday and said that discussions are ongoing with airlines and other stakeholders to reduce disruptions to scheduled flight operations.
The ILS enhancement is part of a scheduled infrastructure upgrade aimed at improving landing precision, especially during low-visibility conditions such as fog and heavy rain. The system plays a critical role in guiding aircraft safely during approach and landing.
Delhi Airport Terminal 2 Closed; Flights Shift to Terminal 1
In a related development, Terminal 2 (T2) at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport will cease operations starting 15 May. As a result, 122 IndiGo flights currently operating from T2 will be relocated to Terminal 1 (T1).
With the newly expanded section of T1 now equipped to manage higher passenger volumes, T2 is being closed for a major upgrade. The redevelopment aims to introduce features such as self-check-in kiosks, a modernised baggage handling system, and enhanced passenger amenities. Once renovations are complete, T2 could be repurposed for international services or to accommodate additional domestic flights.
IGIA operates approximately 1,300 flights daily, making it the busiest airport in India and one of the busiest globally. This figure includes both domestic and international departures and arrivals.
India's Busiest Airport: Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi
IGI Airport, located in Palam, Delhi, is the primary international gateway serving India's National Capital Region (NCR). It is operated by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), a public-private partnership led by the GMR Group. As the busiest airport in the country in terms of both passenger traffic and cargo volume, IGI plays a pivotal role in India's civil aviation sector.
The airport comprises three terminals, Terminal 1 (T1) for low-cost domestic airlines, Terminal 2 (T2), which is currently undergoing modernisation and Terminal 3 (T3), a state-of-the-art integrated terminal used for both domestic and international flights. T3 alone can handle over 34 million passengers annually, making it one of the largest terminals in South Asia.
IGI Airport is equipped with four runways-09/27, 10/28, 11R/29L, and 11L/29R. These runways help manage the high air traffic efficiently and support operations in all weather conditions. The airport is also known for its high safety standards and has implemented advanced air navigation and landing technologies.
