In a significant move to combat cybercrime and financial frauds, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has taken decisive action by directing the pan-India IMEI-based blocking of 392 mobile handsets. These devices were identified as being misused in electricity KYC update scams, highlighting the government's resolve to clamp down on digital frauds. The initiative follows reports from citizens about fraudulent activities involving mobile numbers, where fraudsters used SMS and WhatsApp messages to deceive victims.

The DoT's response involved the use of the Chakshu portal, an AI-driven platform for reporting and analyzing fraudulent activities. Initially, the portal helped identify five suspect numbers, which led to the discovery that 392 handsets linked to 31,740 mobile numbers were involved in such scams. Consequently, Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) across India have been instructed to block these handsets and re-verify the associated mobile connections.
Failure in re-verification will lead to the immediate disconnection of reported numbers and blocking of the associated handsets. This measure not only aims at disrupting the operations of fraudsters but also emphasizes the importance of maintaining secure telecommunications networks. The DoT's actions underscore its commitment to safeguarding citizens from digital threats and ensuring a safer cyber environment.
Citizens have played a crucial role in this initiative by remaining vigilant and reporting suspected fraud communications through the Chakshu-Report Suspected Fraud Communications facility on the Sanchar Saathi portal of DoT. Their proactive stance has been instrumental in aiding the DoT's efforts to combat and prevent cybercrimes and financial frauds effectively.
This recent crackdown is a testament to the government's dedication to enhancing telecommunications security and protecting citizens from the growing menace of digital frauds. By leveraging technology and encouraging citizen participation, the DoT aims to create a more secure digital space for all.
