Dry Day In Delhi Tomorrow: Sale Of Liquor Prohibited In Delhi On World Cup Final Due To Chhath Puja

Liquor and wine outlets in the national capital Delhi will remain closed on Sunday (November 19) due to Chhath Puja. This comes at a time when the final match of the ICC Men's World Cup between India and Australia will take place in Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

In an order, the Commissioner of Excise of Delhi government stated, "In pursuance of the provisions of Rule 52 of Delhi Excise Rules, 2010, it is hereby ordered that the following date shall be observed as "Dry Day" in the National Capital Territory of Delhi by all L-1, L1F, L-2, L-3, L-4, L-5, L-6, L-6FG, L-6FE, L-8, L-9, L-10, L-11, L-14, L-18, L-23, L-23F, L-25, L-26, L-31, L-32, L-33, L-34 and L-35 licensees of the Excise department and opium vends located in Delhi."

The ban on liquor sales in the national capital on Sunday has ruined the plans of cricket lovers who were thinking of enjoying the match along with booze.

One should note that the four-day-long Chhath Puja is being celebrated in India from November 17 to November 20 this year.

Restaurants and pubs serving liquor to hit hard:

The announcement regarding the closure of liquor shops in Delhi on Sunday will be a dampener for owners of the pubs, restaurants, and eateries that serve liquor to customers in the national capital while screening the mega final between India and Australia.

Pre-Diwali liquor sales skyrocketed over 37% in Delhi:

Official figures suggest that Pre-Diwali sales of liquor in Delhi saw a 37% jump in the average number of bottles sold during the fortnight before the festival against the same period last year. According to excise department figures, 2.26 crore bottles of liquor were sold two weeks before Diwali last year.
