Earthquake In Iran: More Trouble For Iran As 4.3 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Gerash As US-Israel Attacks

Amidst the conflict with the US and Israel, Iran is seeing its worst nightmare as a 4.3 magnitude earthquake struck its southern region, especially in the Gerash region. This comes at a time when the US military has launched Operation Epic Fury and Israel is carrying out Operation Lions Roar on the Islamic Republic country.

Earthquake Today In Iran:

As per the United States Geological Survey, a 4.3 magnitude earthquake strikes Iran soils at a depth of around 10 km, however, the earthquake is natural tectonic activity in the seismically active region.

Notably, this type of earthquake is not a new tragic event for Iran as the country is situated in a highly active tectonic regime because of the convergence of the Arabian and Eurasian plates.

The Iranian plateau is subject to most types of tectonic activity, including active folding, faulting and volcanic eruptions. It is well known for its long history of disastrous earthquake activity. Not only have these earthquakes killed thousands, but they have also led to waste of valuable natural resources, as per Wikipedia.

That being said, Iran has a six major seismic provinces such as Azerbaijan, Alborz, Kopeh Dagh, Central Iran, Zagros, and Makran.

The latest earthquake erupted along the active Zagros fault system.

However, what is noteworthy is that the epicentre of the earthquake is the city of Garesh in Iran which is a strategic location.

For instance, Gchine Uranium Mine (near Bandar Abbas) is approximately 150-180 km southeast of Gerash, while Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant is likely around 250-300 km northwest of the city. Further, the city is a corridor to vital industrial resources such as energy, port, and military infrastructure.

US-Israel vs Iran:

US President Donald Trump has warned Iran of a 'big wave' of attacks even after the February 28th and March 1st airstrikes that succumbed the lives of top Iranian officials including supreme leader Ali Khamenei. Trump wishes to eliminate Iran's missile capabilities, annihilate its navy, end its nuclear ambitions and stop it arming militant groups.

Since the weekend, Iran has also launched a host of attacks in countries like Jordan, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and the UAE, targeting US assets and bases in these regions. These Arab countries are on high alert.

While Israel is conducting simultaneous strikes in Tehran and Beirut, aimed at Iranian military sites and Iran's largest proxy group Hezbollah.
