On Friday, the Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) announced that Atal Beemit Vyakti Kalyan Yojana has been extended to June 30, 2022. As part of the scheme, industrial workers are given out unemployment benefits. The initial timeline for it expired on June 30 and retrospectively the fresh extension comes into force from July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2022.

Under the scheme unemployment allowance equivalent to 50% of wages for 3 months will be offered to insured persons who lost their job due to any reason. The claim for the same can be made directly by the insured person directly to an ESIC branch with no requirement of the person's last employer in the process. The credit shall be made directly to the subscriber's bank account. Notably, since the pandemic, over 50,000 people have benefited from the scheme.
This will be beneficial to ESIC subscribers who lose jobs. But there is a strong belief that the number of workers getting retrenched during the covid-19 period is not being reported transparently and the ESIC need to step up here," said Amarjeet Kaur, a board member of the ESIC.
A host of important decisions were taken in the 185th meet of the ESIC. Including the decision to refer patients to empaneled private medical service providers where in house facilities are not offered in ESIC hospitals. Also, wherever any ESI facility is at a distance of over 10 km from the IP, person or patients can directly reach empaneled hospital for medical help.
