Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, on Wednesday, June 18 introduced a new FASTag annual pass to make travel easier for people using private vehicles on national highways. With this pass, private car owners won't have to stop and pay at toll booths every time, they can drive through more smoothly all year, avoiding traffic jams at toll plazas.
However, there is still a problem for commercial vehicles like trucks and buses. These vehicles use highways more often than private cars because they transport goods across long distances every day using national highways.
"The FASTag pass will surely make it easier for private vehicles to cross toll booths on national highways regularly. But commercial vehicles also need a similar pass, solve their toll-related problems too, since they use highways much more frequently than private cars," said Vinkesh Gulati, Former FADA President.

Commercial Vehicle's Contribution:
India's commercial vehicle (CV) sector plays a critical role in the country's economic development and logistics efficiency. According to data from the World Bank, commercial vehicles transport over 60% of the country's freight and contribute approximately 7.1% to India's GDP.
Over 3.7 lakh commercial vehicles are registered on vahan.parivahan.gov till 2025. However, the sector also faces significant challenges. Medium and heavy-duty trucks, while making up only 2% of the total vehicle population, are responsible for nearly 45% of total road transport emissions.
"These vehicles are far more than just carriers of goods, they are essential engines of national progress. From linking remote villages to major cities, supporting industrial expansion, and ensuring timely delivery of goods across the country, the CV sector forms the backbone of India's supply chain. It is a key enabler in India's ambitious journey toward becoming a $5 trillion economy," said Harish Sabharwal, President, All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC).
What Industry Experts Want?
"Commercial vehicles are very important for India's economy. However, the new FASTag annual pass has only been announced for private vehicles. This is unfair to commercial vehicles, which also deserve a similar option. For the past four years, we have been requesting the Ministry of Transport to make travel easier for commercial vehicles, but nothing has been done yet," said Harish Sabharwal, President, AIMTC.
"Due to delays at toll booths, a huge amount of diesel is wasted, about Rs 15 lakh crore every year, added Harish Sabharwal of AIMTC.
All About Fastag Pass:
To make toll payments easier for private car owners, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) will launch an Annual FASTag Pass starting August 15, 2025, priced at Rs 3000. It will be valid for either one year or 200 trips on only on national highways, whichever comes first.
This new pass is expected to reduce traffic jams, cut waiting times at toll plazas, and help avoid arguments over toll charges. It will also help solve the issue of toll plazas located within a 60 km distance by offering a one-time payment for regular travelers.
The Annual FASTag Pass will work with the user's existing FASTag. After the pass expires, it can be easily recharged. Users can pay ₹3,000 using the Rajmargyatra mobile app or the NHAI website. Once the payment is successful, the pass will be activated on the registered FASTag.
