The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has urged state authorities to enhance monitoring of e-commerce warehouses. This move aims to ensure food safety for consumers. During its 45th Central Advisory Committee meeting, FSSAI emphasised the need for standard operating procedures (SOPs) for delivery personnel to maintain food quality.

States and Union Territories were advised to increase surveillance at tourist hotspots, especially during the peak season from November to March. With a high influx of both domestic and international tourists, the use of Food Safety on Wheels Mobile Labs was recommended at these locations.
Focus on E-commerce Warehouses
G Kamala Vardhana Rao, CEO of FSSAI, instructed Food Commissioners to intensify checks on e-commerce warehouses. He highlighted the necessity for SOPs in these facilities and for delivery staff. The aim is to ensure that food safety standards are upheld throughout the supply chain.
The committee also stressed the importance of training Food Business Operators (FBOs) across all States and Union Territories. This training falls under the Food Safety Training and Certification (FoSTaC) programme, which aims to promote food hygiene and safety.
Training and Awareness Initiatives
States and Union Territories have been tasked with training 25 lakh food handlers by March 2026. This includes personnel working in university, college, and hostel canteens. The initiative is part of a broader effort to improve food safety nationwide.
An integrated approach to food safety was another key focus of the meeting. Collaboration among ministries and stakeholders was encouraged, with a call for regular Advisory Committee meetings at both State and District levels.
Consumer Engagement and Outreach
The meeting highlighted the importance of engaging consumers in promoting healthier eating habits as part of the Eat Right India movement. States were encouraged to boost food safety awareness through various outreach activities like fairs, walkathons, and street plays known as Nukkad Nataks.
Over 60 officials participated in this meeting, including Commissioners of Food Safety, representatives from States and UTs, senior FSSAI officials, and members from various sectors such as food industry, consumer groups, agriculture, laboratories, and research bodies.
The discussions underscored the collective responsibility of all stakeholders in ensuring food safety across the country. By enhancing surveillance and training initiatives, FSSAI aims to safeguard public health while fostering a culture of safe eating practices.
