Food regulator FSSAI highlights the need for maintaining tea quality and limiting pesticide residue. A meeting was conducted with stakeholders to address concerns regarding tea safety. Learn more about the regulations in place.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), in collaboration with the Tea Board, underscored the importance of maintaining tea quality by ensuring that pesticide levels do not surpass the maximum residue limit (MRL) set by it. This was highlighted during a consultative meeting held in Kolkata on October 7, 2023. The meeting brought together various stakeholders including tea research associations, tea industries, planters and growers to address widespread concerns regarding the quality and safety of tea.
Shared Responsibility for Ensuring Tea Safety

FSSAI CEO G Kamala Vardhana Rao emphasized the collective responsibility all stakeholders hold towards ensuring tea safety. He provided an overview of Food Safety Standards and Regulations (FSSR), highlighting that tea must be free from extraneous matter, added colouring matter and harmful substances. According to him, pesticide levels in tea should not exceed the MRL prescribed in FSSR.
Flavoured Tea Manufacturers' Obligations
In addition to this, Rao indicated that manufacturers producing flavoured teas are required to register themselves with the Tea Board before they can market their products. This move is aimed at enhancing accountability among producers while also providing consumers with assurance about product safety.
Pesticide Residues: A Central Concern
The meeting also focused on discussing prevalent issues such as pesticide residues found in tea leaves and their mode of entry into these leaves. Stakeholders shared their perspectives on harmonizing MRLs for pesticide residues under FSSR regulations along with default MRLs.
Moving Forward: A Commitment to Quality Assurance
This consultative approach adopted by FSSAI demonstrates its commitment towards addressing consumer concerns about food safety standards within India's extensive tea industry. By fostering open dialogue among key stakeholders – from tea growers and manufacturers to research associations – the FSSAI aims to ensure that India's beloved beverage continues to be produced in compliance with stringent safety standards.
In conclusion, the meeting held by FSSAI and the TEA Board is a clear indication of their joint commitment towards ensuring quality and safety in India's tea industry. The emphasis on shared responsibility among stakeholders, coupled with strict adherence to food safety standards, serves as a robust strategy for tackling issues related to pesticide residues in tea. As we move forward, such collaborative efforts will play an instrumental role in maintaining consumer trust while also enhancing the global reputation of Indian tea.
