LPG gas cylinder rules have been revised in March 2026, due to supply constraint concerns amidst the Middle East war, which has halted transportation at the Red Sea. The Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint for global oil and gas supply, is shut for many days as the US and Israel continue their war with Iran. Because of this, LPG prices in India were hiked. But soon enough, fear of LPG shortage escalated even when the government assured that there is ample of LPG.
LPG Gas Cylinder Booking New Rules:

The Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas introduced 25 day inter- booking period from its previous 21-days inter-booking period. This means, you can only apply for refill of LPG after 25 days now instead of 21 days.
"In light of current geopolitical disruptions to fuel supply and constraints on supply of LPG, Ministry has issued orders to oil refineries for higher LPG production and using such extra production for domestic LPG use," the ministry said.
Further, the ministry said that they have prioritized domestic LPG supply to households and introduced 25 day inter- booking period to avoid hoarding/black marketing. Non domestic supplies from imported LPG is being prioritised to essential non domestic sectors such as Hospitals and Educational institutions.
Accordingly, for LPG supply to other non-domestic sectors, a committee of three EDs of OMCs have been constituted to review the representations for LPG supply to restaurants/hotels/other industries.
However, right after the new rule was declared, residents had flooded the LPG outlets to get their refill of LPG or book new. However, they were stranded in long-queues for many hours. In some cities, LPG distributors said they have not received new LPG supply. While some customers complained that their LPG delivery is delayed or cancelled or they are not able to buy the refill. Many restaurants even complained that their LPG shortage is pushing them to cut down their menus or shutdown business.
