Nowadays the internet has been swept up in a wave of Studio Ghibli obsession, with people turning themselves, their pets, families, and loved ones into charming, wide-eyed characters straight out of a Ghibli film. From solo profile pictures to anime-style family photos, Artificial Intelligence (AI) generated Ghibli images have flooded social media. As the trend grows in popularity, several apps, websites, and online stores have popped up offering free Ghibli-style images and art. However, following the launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT-4 model, authorities in Goa, Tamil Nadu, and Chandigarh have raised concerns over a rise in cybercrimes exploiting this trend. Police have issued warnings about the potential risks, urging the public to be cautious when using these platforms, as they may pose threats to privacy and security.
Ghibli Can Cause Cyber Threat To Your Data and Privacy!
Cybercrime units warn that many of the AI websites and apps can execute silent operations in the background, gathering everything from contact lists to microphone recordings, and they acquire sensitive data, including location information and facial features.

Goa Police recently shared a message on social media, reminding people to be careful while joining the AI apps. It posted, "Joining the AI-generated Ghibli trend is fun, but not all AI apps protect your privacy. Always think before uploading personal photos and use only trusted AI apps."
The Chandigarh Police Cyber Cell has issued a warning about the rise in fake online retailers selling Ghibli artwork and exclusive items. Despite being taken in by appealing offers, victims frequently wind up with fake items or, worse, compromised data.
According to the Chandigarh Cyber Cell advisory, fraudsters send emails that seem like official Ghibli updates in an attempt to trick users into clicking on links that would either install malware or steal their personal information. Fraudsters fabricate tournaments with Ghibli themes to obtain private information or fool people by downloading dangerous software.
Cybercriminals infiltrate Ghibli wallpapers, art packs, or other items that appear to be innocuous with malware and ransomware. Once installed, these malicious programs have the ability to snoop on people, lock devices, and steal data. The Tamil Nadu Police cyber wing warned the public about the dangers of using free AI apps. Users could unknowingly infect their devices with spyware, ransomware, or viruses. Additionally, some platforms may store personal biometric data for long periods, which raises serious concerns about digital identity theft.
A senior official while giving public advisory said, "Many websites offering free Ghibli art downloads are often fronts for malicious activities."
"The Ghibli AI art generators use selfies to train AI systems without clear user consent. Images may be stored permanently and repurposed to create deepfakes or synthetic media," a warning note from Tamil Nadu Police stated.
How to Stay Safe from Fake AI websites or Ghibli Alternative Apps?
Cyber experts strongly recommend that users follow these steps to protect themselves from online threats. Protective measures to avoid cyber phising are as follows:
- Try to always avoid such lite or replica apps if you are suspicious about it.
- Always use AI apps and websites from verified developers who have strong privacy policies. This ensures that your data is handled securely.
- Avoid uploading personal photos to websites or apps that do not clearly explain how they will handle your data and whether it will be deleted after use.
- Be careful about clicking on unfamiliar links or downloading free Ghibli art from sources you can't trust. These can sometimes lead to harmful content or malware.
- Never share sensitive information, such as bank details or personal identification, unless you are completely sure about the platform's credibility and safety.
- If you notice any suspicious activity or believe you've been scammed, do not hesitate to report it. You can file a report at www.cybercrime.gov.in or call the national helpline at 1930.
