In the recent data of global passport rankings for the year 2024, European nations have seized the top positions, sharing the limelight with the long-standing leaders, Singapore and Japan. According to the latest Henley Passport Index, residents of France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Singapore, and Spain now enjoy unparalleled travel freedom with visa-free access to 194 destinations, outpacing even the Asian giants.
India, however, stands at the 80th spot, allowing its passport holders to travel to 62 countries without the need for a visa. The nation shares its ranking with Uzbekistan, while its neighbouring rival, Pakistan, is positioned at 101st place.

For the past five years, Singapore and Japan have held the title of having the world's most powerful passports. This year, the European nations have not only caught up but also surpassed them. France, Germany, Italy, and Spain have achieved three more visa-free destinations than the previous year, totalling 194 out of 227.
South Korea, Sweden, and Finland, each climbing one spot, now share the joint second position with access to 193 locations. Austria, Denmark, Ireland, and the Netherlands hold the third position, offering their citizens visa-free travel to 192 destinations.
The Henley Passport Index 2024 also highlights the remarkable ascent of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which has become the fastest climber over the past decade, securing 11th place and granting its citizens access to 183 destinations without a visa.
China has also seen a significant improvement, moving up two spots to land in 62nd place. Chinese passport holders now enjoy visa-free access to 85 destinations, nearly twice as many as a decade ago. This underscores a broader global trend toward greater travel freedom.
Dr Christian Kaelin, the chairman of immigration consultancy Henley & Partners, remarked on the widening gap in travel freedom between countries. Over the years, the average number of destinations accessible without a visa has almost doubled, increasing from 58 in 2006 to 111 in 2024. Despite this positive trend, the top-ranking countries now boast the ability to travel to a staggering 166 more destinations visa-free than Afghanistan, which sits at the bottom of the ranking with access to just 28 countries.
