Google has reportedly laid off its entire Python team, opting for cheaper labour outside the United States. The decision revealed in a report by Free Press Journal, has sparked criticism from former team members, highlighting the human cost of corporate restructuring.
According to the report, the Sundar Pichai-led company has made the decision to reduce costs by hiring cheaper talent abroad, a move that has led to the dissolution of the US-based Python team. This team, consisting of less than 10 members, played a crucial role in overseeing a significant portion of Google's Python ecosystem, including maintaining a stable version of Python, updating third-party packages, and developing essential tools like a typechecker.

Former members of the Python team have expressed disappointment and sadness over the decision. One member, reflecting on a 20-year career, described working on the Python team as "by far the best job" they had ever had. Another employee lamented the emotional toll of witnessing colleagues being laid off and being asked to onboard their replacements from different countries, suggesting disillusionment with the current state of capitalism in the United States.
The report suggests that Google is now in the process of building a new Python team from scratch in Munich, Germany, as part of its global restructuring efforts. This move comes in as Google's broader strategy of expanding its operations overseas while streamlining costs domestically.
This isn't the first time Google has made headlines for its workforce restructuring. Earlier reports from Business Insider revealed job cuts across various departments, including real estate, finance, engineering, hardware, and assistant teams. The finance department, in particular, saw significant downsizing, with Google's finance chief, Ruth Porat, announcing plans to expand operations in Bangalore, Mexico City, and Dublin.
January saw hundreds of workers let go across multiple teams as Google focused on investing in artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies. These layoffs, coupled with the recent axing of the Python team, paint a picture of a company in transition.
