New Delhi, March 29 – In a significant development, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has alerted citizens about fraudulent calls where individuals impersonate DoT officials, threatening to disconnect mobile connections. These calls are identified as attempts to extract personal information for executing financial frauds. The DoT's official statement released on Friday emphasized the rising concern over these fake communications.

Furthermore, the advisory highlighted a specific scam involving WhatsApp calls from foreign numbers, particularly those starting with +92, where the callers pose as government officials. The primary aim behind these deceitful calls is to intimidate the recipients and manipulate them into divulging sensitive personal information, thereby facilitating cybercrime and financial frauds.
The DoT clarified that it never authorizes any individual or entity to make such threatening calls on its behalf. It strongly advises the public to remain cautious and refrain from sharing any personal details upon receiving such dubious calls. In an effort to combat this menace, the DoT has urged citizens to report these fraudulent communications through the 'Chakshu-Report Suspected Fraud Communications' feature available on the Sanchar Saathi portal.
This initiative is part of the DoT's broader strategy to prevent the misuse of telecom resources in cybercrime and financial fraud activities. By encouraging proactive reporting from the public, the DoT aims to enhance its efforts in safeguarding citizens against these growing threats.
The advisory serves as a crucial reminder for individuals to stay vigilant and verify the authenticity of any communication claiming to represent government departments or officials. As cybercriminals become increasingly sophisticated in their methods, public awareness and prompt reporting are vital tools in the fight against telecom-related frauds.
