Green hydrogen emerges as a promising energy solution for India, offering the potential to decarbonize industries, reduce emissions, and meet growing energy demands. Explore the key findings and recommendations from the World Economic Forums report on green hydrogen in India.
In a significant development, the World Economic Forum (WEF) has highlighted the immense potential of green hydrogen in India. This clean and versatile energy carrier offers a unique opportunity to not only provide energy for sectors such as fertilizers, chemicals, refining, and iron but also significantly reduce carbon emissions compared to traditional fossil fuels.

India's Energy Needs and Net-Zero Commitment
As the third-largest economy globally in terms of energy requirements, India faces a rapidly growing demand for energy. Projections indicate a substantial 35% increase in energy demand by 2030. This surge in energy consumption poses significant challenges, particularly in light of India's commitment to achieve net zero by 2070, as pledged at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow.
Green Hydrogen: A Key Enabler for Net Zero
The WEF report emphasizes the critical role of green hydrogen in helping India meet its energy security needs while simultaneously reducing emissions in hard-to-abate sectors. Produced through the electrolysis of water using renewable energy sources, green hydrogen offers a clean, flexible, and versatile energy solution that can address the delicate balance between energy supply and climate change.
National Green Hydrogen Mission: Driving Green Hydrogen Adoption
Recognizing the potential of green hydrogen, the Indian government launched the National Green Hydrogen Mission in early 2022. This ambitious initiative aims to spur green hydrogen production and consumption through incentive funding of approximately USD 2.3 billion, distributed between 2022 and 2030. The mission targets the production of 5 MMTPA of green hydrogen by 2030, aligning with India's projected overall hydrogen demand of 11 MMTPA at that time.
Challenges and Opportunities
While India possesses substantial renewable energy potential to support its green hydrogen goals, rapid capacity addition is essential. Currently, the country's hydrogen supply is predominantly grey hydrogen, produced using fossil fuels with associated CO2 emissions. Limited on-the-ground traction for green hydrogen presents another challenge, with key players adopting a wait-and-watch approach. However, the report anticipates significant green hydrogen production beginning in 2027 and beyond.
Green hydrogen holds immense promise for India's energy transition journey. By embracing this clean and sustainable energy source, India can not only meet its growing energy needs but also make significant strides towards achieving its net-zero commitment. The National Green Hydrogen Mission serves as a catalyst for driving green hydrogen adoption, and with concerted efforts from both the public and private sectors, India can unlock the full potential of this transformative energy carrier.
