Tesla CEO and billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has unveiled GrokiPedia, a new AI-powered online encyclopedia developed by his artificial intelligence company xAI. The platform, launched on October 28, is now being considered a direct rival to Wikipedia, which Musk has repeatedly criticised for being "biased" and "woke", in his own words.

What Is GrokiPedia?
GrokiPedia is designed as an AI-driven encyclopedia, where all articles are generated and verified by Grok, xAI's chatbot. On the other hand, Wikipedia, which allows crowdsourced edits from millions of volunteers, and GrokiPedia do not permit users to edit entries directly. Instead, users can only submit requests for changes, which are then reviewed by the AI system.
As per reports, the platform currently features around 885,000 articles, many of which were initially adapted or copied from Wikipedia.
Wikipedia vs GrokiPedia: Major Differences
Founded in 2001, Wikipedia today is one of the world's most visited websites, hosting over seven million English-language articles. It operates as a nonprofit platform, run by the Wikimedia Foundation, where anyone can contribute or edit content by following the rules of the organisation. It mainly focuses on open collaboration and human participation.
GrokiPedia, on the other hand, is Musk's corporate-led, AI-based alternative. Articles are generated automatically, reviewed by Grok for authenticity and managed under xAI's oversight. While Wikipedia is a collective intelligence of global contributors, GrokiPedia is all AI-led.
How does Grokipedia source and generate its articles?
Grokipedia writes its articles with the help of artificial intelligence, mainly through xAI's chatbot called Grok. The system works by first going through existing Wikipedia articles and using them as a base. Grok then checks the information in those articles to see if anything is missing, unclear, or inaccurate. After that, it rewrites and updates the content using AI-fixing errors, adding more context, and aiming to present what the platform describes as "the complete truth".
Bias and Controversy
Musk and his supporters argue that Wikipedia leans toward liberal perspectives, while GrokiPedia promises to offer a more balanced, fact-focused approach. However, early reviews suggest that GrokiPedia itself may have a conservative tilt, raising questions about how "truth" is defined and who controls it.
The Wikimedia Foundation responded by saying that Wikipedia's content is written by human contributors, which already serves as a base for many AI systems, including Musk's new platform. Critics also warn that GrokiPedia's limited transparency and lack of editorial inputs could make it prone to algorithmic bias.
