Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda urged the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to educate consumers on food safety and promote healthy eating habits. This request was made during a review meeting at FSSAI headquarters, according to an official statement.

Nadda emphasised the importance of empowering citizens with evidence-based information on food safety issues. "It is only then that our work will be accomplished in totality," he said. He stressed that regulatory issues are crucial, but consumer communication and sensitisation are essential for achieving food safety objectives.
Promoting Healthy Eating Habits
The Union Health Minister highlighted the need to understand the diverse dietary habits across different regions in India. "In a large country like India, different regions have varied dietary habits and preferences. Let us broaden our understanding of their behaviours," he said. This understanding will help frame policies aligned with these diversities.
Nadda commended FSSAI's efforts in various areas, including millets and CODEX standards. He appreciated initiatives to train and equip street vendors, stressing the importance of empowering consumers. "The issue of food safety is a huge responsibility on FSSAI. Let us become global leaders in this area," Nadda stated.
FSSAI's Initiatives and Achievements
G Kamala Vardhana Rao, CEO of FSSAI, briefed Nadda on various initiatives taken up by the organisation. Nadda noted significant progress since his last visit in 2016, congratulating FSSAI for advancements in strengthening the food safety ecosystem and fostering behavioural change among stakeholders.
The Union Minister also highlighted FSSAI's contributions to developing global standards, establishing robust testing infrastructure, and launching initiatives like the Eat Right India campaign. He stressed the importance of addressing emerging food safety trends and promoting sustainable farming practices.
Engaging Stakeholders
Nadda emphasised proactive communication with industry and stakeholders. "Let us take a proactive lead and communicate with the industry and stakeholders and make them our partners in our healthy eating initiatives and efforts," he urged FSSAI.
He also pointed out the need to assess the strengths, limitations, and challenges of different states to bring them onto a unified platform of pan-India standards. "Let us understand their individual issues so that we can support them and strengthen their efforts," Nadda added.
Senior officers from the Health Ministry and FSSAI attended the meeting, with over 1,000 officers joining virtually from regional and branch offices.
The Union Minister concluded by stressing the importance of leveraging technology to enhance food safety management. He encouraged FSSAI to continue its leadership in this area while promoting sustainable practices.
