On Friday, May 19, 2023, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced the withdrawal from circulation of Rs 2,000 banknotes. RBI has also said that there is no need for the common people to worry about this.
RBI in a Tweet said, "₹2000 Denomination Banknotes - Withdrawal from Circulation; Will continue as Legal Tender"
The decision was taken by the RBI in accordance with the clean note policy. Till September 30, these notes may be returned to the bank. Don't worry if you have 2000 notes. Here are key highlights of the RBI circular about Rs. 2000 currency notes.
1. From May 23, 2023, banks will exchange the Rs. 2000 currency notes up to a ceiling of Rs 20,000 at a time.
2. These currency notes are completely valid and no one can refuse to take them.
According to the RBI, "The facility for deposit and/or exchange of ₹2000 banknotes shall be available for members of the public up to September 30, 2023."
3. The RBI has said categorically that the value of the rupee has not been eliminated. You still have an Rs. 2000 bill in your pocket.

RBI has made it clear, you still should not consider demonetisation by taking Rs 2000 note. The Rs. 2000 rupee note in the market is still legal. It can be used to buy, pay and make payments.
In November 2016, the Rs 2,000 denomination banknote was created under Section 24(1) of the RBI Act, 1934, largely to quickly address the economy's need for cash following the removal of the legal tender status of all Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 banknotes in use at the time.
