Farmers in Himachal Pradesh are increasingly embracing natural farming, a trend that is gaining traction in other states as well, according to Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla. He made these remarks during a two-day international conference on natural farming aimed at fostering sustainable food systems. The event took place at Dr YS Parmar Horticulture and Forestry University, Nauni, in Solan district.

Governor of Gujarat Acharya Devvrat attended the conference as a special guest and keynote speaker. Shukla praised Nauni University for its significant role in promoting natural farming nationwide. He also commended Acharya Devvrat for his efforts in transforming natural farming practices in Himachal Pradesh.
Growing Popularity of Natural Farming
The increasing adoption of natural farming is evident, with approximately 1.94 lakh farmers from 3,584 panchayats cultivating diverse crops on 34,342 hectares of land naturally, Shukla noted. This method's success has drawn attention from agricultural scientists, research scholars, tourists, farmers, and agricultural officers across the country who visit Himachal Pradesh to learn more about these practices.
Shukla mentioned that Niti Aayog has initiated the National Mission on Natural Farming based on Himachal Pradesh's model. This mission aims to implement natural farming practices more broadly across India. The central government is also actively promoting this method by integrating it with the Traditional Agriculture Development Scheme and issuing guidelines for its implementation.
Future Plans and Government Support
In the financial year 2024-25, around 36,000 new farmers will be introduced to natural farming by adding 10 new farmers in every panchayat. These farmers will receive certification through a dedicated portal. Additionally, 10 new farmer-producer associations will be established to empower farmers and enhance the marketing of their products.
Acharya Devvrat congratulated Himachal Pradesh's farmers for adopting natural farming and acknowledged the university scientists' efforts in promoting this method. He emphasized the positive outcomes of research conducted by various universities and stressed the importance of natural farming for future generations.
Devvrat also discussed the adverse effects of global warming and the harm caused by excessive use of urea and DAP fertilisers to boost production. He highlighted that natural farming could mitigate these issues while ensuring sustainable agricultural practices.
The central government's continuous efforts to promote natural farming reflect its commitment to sustainable agriculture. By linking this method with existing schemes and providing clear guidelines, the government aims to expand natural farming practices across India.
The conference underscored the importance of sustainable food systems and showcased Himachal Pradesh's successful model of natural farming. The state's achievements serve as an inspiration for other regions looking to adopt environmentally friendly agricultural practices.
The event concluded with a sense of pride for Himachal Pradesh's contributions to natural farming and optimism for its future growth. The collaborative efforts of farmers, scientists, and government initiatives are paving the way for a more sustainable agricultural landscape in India.
